Your Avatar and Your Theme: Leveling Up

Picking a theme does more than change the colors. It gives you a character of your own, and that character levels up as you type. This article explains what a theme changes, how your character is chosen, and how the levels are earned.

Five of the six themes redress the whole site. In place of the plain blue bar across the top you get an illustrated banner carrying your character, with your own name on a plate beside it and your character's name and rank below, and the lesson list, the stats strip and the daily goal dial are drawn in the theme's colors. Classic Typing.com is the one that keeps the plain blue site.

A theme also changes the artwork on the on-screen keyboard, the screens you see when you finish a screen or reach a new level, the lesson videos, and the voice that reads your lessons out to you.

Every theme comes with characters of its own. Classic Typing.com, Toons In Time and Super Typing Force have two each; The Pixel Kingdom, The Princess Adventures and Nitro Type have four. A tile in the Themes window opens to show them, and once you have picked one the footer tells you who you will start as. Picking a different theme is covered here.

Each tile also carries a strip of five dots, one for every level, showing how many of them you have earned so far.

You earn XP by completing lessons. Your character has five levels, and you reach them at 7,000, 18,000, 36,000 and 60,000 XP. Whichever level you are on is shown in the top bar all the time, as your character's rank and name and a number out of five, with the XP still to go beside it.

Each theme keeps its own XP. Typing.com stores your progress per theme, so a character you have levelled up stays where it is, and picking a different theme starts that theme's character from its own total. Your lessons and your typing history are unaffected either way - it is only the character's level that is counted separately.

The Achievements page has an Avatar Levels tab. It lists each theme's characters with the rank you have reached out of five, and the one after it, over a line reminding you that XP comes from completing lessons.

Pro-Tip: If the character voice reading your lessons is not the one you want, the Read Aloud Settings window inside any lesson carries a Use Default Voice switch that swaps it for the standard voice.
