What Is The Legacy Curriculum?

On August 1st, 2021, Typing.com introduced the grade-based curriculum it uses today, running from Kindergarten to 12th Grade plus Adult Learner. What came before it is now called the Legacy Curriculum. If you are choosing a curriculum, choose the grade-based one. It is the curriculum Typing.com maintains and builds new content for, and it matches its lessons to a class’s actual grade rather than to one of three broad skill levels. Typing.com has recommended moving classes off the Legacy Curriculum since 2022, and it stays available only so that classes already using it are not interrupted.

The Typing.com Legacy curriculum is organized into five groups of units:

• Learn To Type: the three skill levels, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced, to suit different student proficiencies.

• Beyond Typing: Tech Readiness, Career Prep and Coding Essentials, which take students from the computer skills they will need, through preparing for work, to writing practical code.

• All three Beyond Typing units need PLUS, and each carries a gold crown in the unit list to say so. Everything else here is free: the three skill levels, Reinforcement, Stories, Custom Lessons and Problem Keys.

• Personalized Typing and Personalized Practice: Custom Lessons, which is where anything you build yourself appears, and Problem Keys, which drills the keys a student keeps missing.

The Typing Practice group is what students move on to once they have finished the three levels. It holds Reinforcement, for building speed and accuracy, and Stories, which the curriculum describes as a new adventure every time.

The Curriculum list offers Typing.com Legacy, Kindergarten - Legacy and 1st Grade - Legacy. Only Typing.com Legacy is the three-level curriculum described above. The other two are earlier versions of the grade-based Kindergarten and 1st Grade, and they are built from grade-based units such as Learn the Keys 1 and Cross Curricular 1. Pick the one whose units you want.

So the Legacy Curriculum still works, and a class part-way through it can finish. But it is the older option in every respect - it is not being added to, and its three skill levels cannot target a grade the way the current curriculum does. If you are setting up a new class, or you have a class you can move, use the grade-based curriculum instead. You can change it at any time in the Curriculum list on the Details tab of Class Settings.
