Archive a Class (Teacher)
Need to clean up your class list without losing valuable student data? The Archive Class feature is here to help! This powerful tool lets you hide inactive classes from your main view while preserving all student progress and maintaining their access to Typing.com.
How It Works
When you archive a class, here's what happens:
The class disappears from your active classes list and moves to the new Archived section
Students become individual users who can still access Typing.com with their existing accounts
Students using a PLUS license through the archived class will lose PLUS when the class is archived
All student progress and data is preserved, but no new student data is tracked (unless the class is unarchived)
You can view the class anytime from the Archived section
The class can be unarchived at any time to restore it fully, "re-attaching" students and restoring assignments
Student activity from archived classes will no longer appear on dashboards or live activity views
Pro-Tip: Think of archiving as a "hide" function rather than deletion. Everything is safely stored and can be restored whenever you need it.
Note for Different Login Types: If you use Google Classroom, you'll need to unsync your class first before archiving. For Clever/ClassLink users, archiving simply hides the class while keeping everything intact. Username/Password classes can be archived directly with no extra steps.
Student Experience
When a student's class is archived, their portal experience becomes the same as any individual user:
They will no longer see custom content or assignments from the archived class
They'll have the default daily goal and other individual user defaults
Students who had PLUS through the archived class will lose PLUS when the class is archived
Individual user panel settings are preserved regardless of license status
IMPORTANT: Students in archived classes will not have their aggregate typing data saved. This means:
Archived classes do not appear in the Reports section reached from the left-hand navigation
Progress made by students in an archived class will not be reported at an admin level
If you unarchive the class later, you may see student lesson progress but limited performance data
Important Considerations
Students in Multiple Classes: If a student belongs to both an archived class and an active class, they'll maintain their connection to the active class and continue having their typing data tracked.
License Management: When a class is archived, any PLUS licenses assigned to students in that class are returned to the license pool and become available for active, eligible students to pick up on their next login.
Assignments & Custom Lessons: When a class is archived, students can no longer access assignments or custom lessons created for that class. These will be hidden from both student and teacher views but restored if the class is unarchived.
Reporting: You can still view reports for an archived class by opening that class from the archived section and choosing Reports inside it. Archived classes will not show up in the Reports section reached from the left-hand navigation.
Co-Teachers: When a class with multiple teachers is archived, all teachers will see the change. The class will move to the Archived section for all co-teachers.
School and District View: Administrators can archive a teacher's class(es) by navigating to that teacher and viewing their classes.
How to Archive a Class
Step 1: Log in to your Teacher Portal HERE.
Step 2: Click on Classes in the main navigation.
Step 3: Find the class you want to archive and click the checkbox to the left of the class name to select it.
Step 4: Click the Archive button. Class Settings, Archive and Delete sit above the class list and become available as soon as you select a class.
Step 5: A confirmation window appears explaining that archiving removes the class from your active list without permanently deleting it, and that you can restore it at any time from the archived section. It also warns that students using PLUS seats who are not in another active class will have their PLUS removed, freeing up those seats.
Step 6: Click Archive Class to confirm and complete the process.
That's it! Your class is now safely archived and can be found by clicking View Archived Classes at the bottom of your Classes page.
How to Find Your Archived Classes
Step 1: Go to your Classes page.
Step 2: Look for the View Archived Classes link at the bottom of the page and click it. If you haven't archived anything yet, the link isn't there - it only appears once you have at least one archived class.
Step 3: You'll see all your archived classes listed here, along with their student counts and curriculum information.
How to Unarchive a Class
Step 1: Navigate to your archived classes by clicking View Archived Classes from the main Classes page.
Step 2: Find the class you want to restore.
Step 3: (1) Click the checkbox to the left of the class name to select it, then (2) click Unarchive above the list. The button stays grayed out until a class is selected.
Step 4: A confirmation box headed Unarchive {class name} explains that this restores the class to your active classes list and resumes normal visibility and reporting. Click Unarchive Class and it moves back to your active list with all students, assignments and data intact.
Step 5: Click Back to Active Classes to return to your main Classes page and see your restored class.
Note: When you unarchive a class, student data tracking will resume from that date forward. Any activity that occurred while the class was archived will not be included in reports.
