How Do I Assign Licenses To Students?

We want to make managing licenses for your students as simple and clear as possible. Here’s everything you need to know about assigning licenses on Typing.com:

• Automatic License Assignment: Good news! You don't have to assign licenses (or seats) by hand. Once you have bought them, each student picks one up the next time they log in, first come, first served.

  • Example Scenario: If you have 40 students but only 30 licenses, the first 30 to log in get one. The other 10 keep free accounts with ads. They can still work through Learn to Type and anything you have assigned from it, but the PLUS units stay locked until a seat comes free.

• If you hold more than one license: seats are used at the teacher level first, then the school level, and the district level last.

• Freeing Up Licenses: To hand every seat back at once:

  • Click Billing in the left-hand menu.

  • On your license, under Seats Usage, click Free All Seats.

  • A window explains what will happen and asks you to type the word CONFIRM. Type it into (1) Confirm and click (2) Free All Seats to finish, or Cancel to back out.

• What freeing seats does: it removes PLUS from the students holding those seats and gives it to the next students who log in. It does not remove or unlink any student account, and you can do it as often as you need.

• Archiving frees seats too: when you archive a class, any student on a PLUS seat who is not in another active class gives that seat back.

If you hold a school or district license, you do not have to leave the handout to chance. Open Billing and pick the Manage Licenses tab. A seat counter sits at the top - ours reads 209 / 1000 seats used - and below it two questions.

How will licenses be distributed? offers three choices. Allow all schools and grades to use PLUS licenses leaves it first come, first served across everyone. Share PLUS licenses by my district’s schools lists your schools with a tick box each, so only the schools you tick can draw on the pool. Share PLUS licenses by grade-based curriculum does the same thing by grade. In each case a seat is still taken the moment a student logs in - you are choosing who is eligible, not naming individuals.

What about non-PLUS students? decides what everyone else gets. Non-PLUS students access Typing.com with ads enabled lets them carry on with a free account. Non-PLUS students cannot access Typing.com shows them a notice that their account is disabled instead. Click Save Changes when you are done.

• Student Progress: Don’t worry! Freeing up seats will not reset the progress of students who continue using Typing.com.

Pro-Tips: Licenses are only for students; teachers do not need licenses.

To see where your licenses have actually gone, open Reports and run License Usage under Usage Reports. It lists every student with the license status they are on and when they last logged in. If you still have questions, our support team is always here to help. Happy teaching!
