Use the Student Self-Join Link (Teacher)
Need to add students to your class quickly and effortlessly? The Student Self-Join Link is your best friend. It’s simple, saves time, and works like a charm. Here’s how to make the most of it:
Effortlessly add students: the self-join link lets a student join your class with the account they already have, or with a new one they create as they join.
Rostered through Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams: those classes have no join code. Class Settings says so in as many words: "Self-join is not available for Google Classroom classes. You must update your roster via Google Classroom." To use a self-join link, create a class of your own on Typing.com and share that class's link.
Clever or ClassLink Users: The self-join link is not available if you’re rostering through Clever or ClassLink.
Let’s Get Started
Step 1: Log in to your Teacher Portal here.
Step 2: Click Classes in the left-hand menu.
Step 3: Click the class you want the link for.
Step 4: Click Class Join Code in the top right of the class. That copies the whole self-join link to your clipboard - the button confirms with Copied to your clipboard! - and the code itself is printed on the button so you can read it off.
Pro-Tip: The tail of the link is the class's Self-Join Code, and you can change it to something easier to say out loud - typing.com/join#room12, say. It is on the Details tab of Class Settings, under Self-Join Settings, and it saves with Save All Changes.
Step 5: Share the link with your students and have them open it in a browser.
Step 6: The link opens a page headed Join [your name]’s Class with two choices: Use My Existing Typing.com Account and Create a New Typing.com Account. The student picks one and signs in or signs up.
Step 7: Each student who joins this way waits for your approval. While anyone is waiting, your Classes page carries a blue banner counting the requests, with Review now on the end of it. Click it to open Students Requesting to Join.
Step 8: On that page, tick the students you want and click Approve Students, or Reject Students to turn them away. Both are grayed out until you tick someone, and both ask you to confirm.
Pro-Tip: You do not have to go looking for requests. The same banner appears on the class's own page, counting only that class's requests.
That’s it! Once you refresh the page and return to the class, you’ll find the students are now part of your class. If you need any further assistance, our support team is always here to help. Happy typing!
