Differences Between a Teacher Account and a Student Account

Ever wondered, “What’s the difference between a Teacher Account and a Student Account?” While it might sound obvious, there are important distinctions that make each account unique. Let’s dive in!

Teacher Pro-Tip: Teacher accounts cannot be converted to student accounts (or vice versa). If you want to take the same lessons as your students, create a student account using the same email and password as your teacher account. You can create a free student account HERE.

The Teacher Portal is your command center for managing most student account settings. You have the flexibility to control various aspects of your students' learning experience, ensuring they progress in the best way possible. Below is a list of the Class Settings you control from it.

Class Settings opens from any class and has eight tabs:

• Details: The class name, the Curriculum - which sets the grade level - the period, the Website Language, and the class's Self-Join Code.

• Games: Which of the typing games your students can play, individually or all at once.

• Lessons: Which lessons are active for the class, unit by unit, with a live count of how many are switched on.

• Grading: Automatic grading by letter or by points, whether typing lessons are graded on speed or accuracy, and the accuracy needed for a perfect score.

• Goals: A daily typing goal for the class, and whether games stay locked until that goal is met.

• Announcement: A message of up to 500 characters that your students see on their dashboard when they log in, with an optional date to show it until.

• Advanced Options: Seven groups of settings, listed below - this is where most of the controls in this article actually live.

• Accessibility: Dyslexic font, a high contrast theme, read aloud, closed captions, typing sounds, and right- or left-hand-only typing. These can also be set for one student at a time.

Inside the Advanced Options tab:

• Lesson Progression: Whether students can redo completed lessons and screens, progress out of order, and restart a typing screen.

• Lesson Configuration: Whether the on-screen keyboard shows during lessons, and whether the backspace key works.

• Features: Access to typing tests, the class scoreboard, and AI-generated topics within Problem Keys.

• Account Settings: Seven checkboxes covering what students may change about their own account - account details, their password, their theme, typing sounds, Read Aloud, access from small screens, and whether their passwords are readable in your roster.

• Class Status: Active, Paused, or active only during set times.

• Keyboard Settings: The Keyboard Layout for the class, with a (Need help deciding?) link if you are not sure which one your keyboards are.

• Permitted IP Addresses: The addresses students may log in from, one per line. IP restrictions do not affect your own access to the Teacher Portal.

Reports have their own tab on each class, beside Class Settings, where you can print and download your students' progress.

Student Pro-Tip: Choose the right username when creating your account, as it’s your unique identifier and cannot be changed later. Only teachers can change a student’s username.

• Linked to Class: If linked to a teacher's class, your teacher decides some of your settings - your keyboard layout, your website language, whether you can change your password, whether you can change your theme, and whether you can toggle typing sounds and Read Aloud. Note: If you find restrictions to certain settings you expected to have available the best thing to do is to talk to your teacher and see how they feel about allowing a degree of student control over some configurations.
