Adaptive Practice and Your Problem Keys

Edited

Typing.com keeps track of the keys you miss most often and builds practice lessons out of them. This article shows you where to find that, what the panel is telling you, and how to start a practice lesson.

Find Your Problem Keys

Step 1: Log in to your account here.

Step 2: Go to the bottom of the list on the left of your lessons page. The last group is Adaptive Practice, and it holds one item: Your Problem Keys.

Step 3: Click it. A panel opens in place of the lesson list, headed Top Problem Keys.

How Typing.com decides which keys are a problem

As you work through lessons, the site records the keys you miss. Up to ten are tracked at a time, and the worst four are the ones it calls your problem keys. Until you have typed enough for it to have an opinion, the panel says there are none yet and asks you to complete a few lesson screens first.

Start a practice lesson

Once there are keys to work on, the panel offers up to three practice cards - Practice 2 Keys, Practice 3 Keys and Practice 4 Keys - each listing the keys it will use and each with a Start button of its own. A card appears once you have that many problem keys recorded.

Practice 3 Keys and Practice 4 Keys require PLUS. The two account types are compared here.

The panel says where the practice comes from: Typing.com uses TypeAI to write short stories built around your troublesome keys. Your teacher can turn that off with a class setting, Allow AI generated topics within Problem Keys.

Keys You Miss Most Often

Under the cards sits a chart headed Keys You Miss Most Often. It splits the keys it is tracking into two: Your Problem Keys, the worst of them, and Worth Practicing, the rest. Hover a bar and it names the key and how often you miss it.

Starting over

Reset Problem Keys, beside the panel's heading, clears everything recorded so far and starts the tracking again. It asks you to confirm before it does.

Pro-Tip: The same keys appear on your progress page as Your Top Problem Keys, with a keyboard shaded to show where they sit. The View My Progress link on the chart takes you straight there.
