School-wide and District-wide Settings

Edited

If you run a school or a district on Typing.com, you can set one group of defaults that every class on your account starts from. This article shows you where those defaults live, what they cover, and how they reach classes your teachers have already created.

Note: These settings require a PLUS account.

Open your settings page

Step 1: Log in to your Teacher Portal HERE.

Step 2: Click your name at the top right of any page to open your account menu.

Step 3: Choose District-wide Settings.

On a school account the same item reads School-wide Settings, and the page it opens is the same page under a different heading.

What Default Class Settings covers

The page holds a single section, Default Class Settings. Its options are grouped into Features, Account Settings, Lesson Progression and Lesson Configuration, with Games below a divider.

Those four groups are the same four a teacher finds under Advanced Options in a class of their own, which is why a class picks up the choices you make here. How to Adjust Class Settings goes through what each one does.

Features holds Allow Typing Tests, Enable Class Scoreboard and Allow AI generated topics within Problem Keys.

Account Settings carries seven boxes, covering account changes, passwords, small screens, typing sounds, Read Aloud and themes. Lesson Progression carries four, covering redoing lessons and screens, moving through lessons out of order, and the restart button on a typing screen. Lesson Configuration carries two, for the on-screen keyboard and the backspace key.

Choosing which games students can play

Games opens with Allow Access to All Games, and below it sits one card per game: Keyboard Ninja, Keyboard Jump, Tommy Q, Z Type, Type A Balloon, Type Toss and Nitro Type. Each card has its own Allow Access box, so you can open the whole set at once or choose them one at a time.

To make that choice for a single class instead of for the whole account, see Restrict Access to Games.

Save your defaults

Save Default Class Settings sits at the top right of the section. It stays grayed out while the page matches what is already stored, and becomes available as soon as you change something. Click it to keep your defaults.

What this does to classes that already exist

A default is not copied into a class when the class is made. Typing.com checks the defaults every time it needs a class's settings, so changing one here changes classes that are already running - but only where the class has not set that option for itself. A class that has its own answer to an option keeps it.

If more than one default applies, the closest one to the class wins: the class's own setting first, then your school's, then your district's, then Typing.com's built-in value.

Where a class has been adjusted, it keeps its own value for the setting that was adjusted. Everything else in that class still follows your defaults.

What a teacher sees afterwards

When a teacher opens Class Settings on a class that has been adjusted, the panel carries a note saying that one or more of its settings have been uniquely modified for that class, and each setting that differs from your default is marked. Beside the note is a link that puts the panel back on your defaults: Reset to district defaults, or Reset to school defaults where the school carries its own. It asks for confirmation, and it resets only the settings on that one panel.

Pro-Tips

  • Your defaults are a starting point rather than a lock. A teacher can still change any of these settings for their own class.

  • The page carries a Watch Tutorial button at the top right, with a short video on district-wide and school-wide settings.

  • To set something for one student rather than for a whole account, see Change Individual Student Settings.
